CANCER NS
Cancer Natural Solutions.  Just the word instills a dread fear in most people.  Unlike an outside pathogen, our body's own DNA becomes the problem.  Cells go into an uncontrolled and toxic reproduction mode, destroying neighboring cells and often spreading throughout the body.  The mechanisms that damage the nuclear DNA are often environmental carcinogens, age related deterioration and/or inherited.  Defenses involve protecting your DNA from damage and supporting your body's natural defenses against aberrant cell growth.  Once again, diet, exercise and other lifestyle factors are the 80% solution.

Sunlight (Vitamin D) - tops the list for its broad protective benefits against the most numerous and deadly cancers of the colon, prostate, breast and digestive system.  It even LOWERS the death rate from melanoma skin cancer induced by sun exposure.  Dermatologist's parochial warnings to avoid all sun causes at least 10 times as many other deadly cancers for every fatal melanoma avoided.   Ask your physician to test, (25 OH) D, and supplement as necessary to reach optimal levels.

Cruciferous Vegetables - besides supporting general health, these vegetables contain phytochemicals known as glucosinolates.  These inhibit and fight cancer through a variety of mechanisms, protecting healthy DNA, slowing cancer growth and inducing cancer cells to die (apoptosis). My first choice - consume in their natural form with all the other vital nutrients, consider a cruciferous vegetable extract on off days or if you are adverse to the taste.

Exercise
- cuts men and women's colon cancer risk 24% based upon a review of 52 studies.  Vigorous exercise reduces breast cancer risk by 30%.

Green Tea - although preliminary, evidence indicates that chemicals (catechins) in green tea, EGC & EGCG inhibit cancer through several pathways.  Available in supplement form.

Lose Weight - The American Cancer Society estimates 14/20% of Men/Women contract cancer from being overweight or obese.  Cancer deaths rise 52/62% for Men/Women for those with a BMI over 40.

Selenium - in hundreds of animal studies and 7 of 8 human trials, higher intake of this trace mineral dramatically reduced a number of cancers.  For men prostate cancer was reduced by over 50% with a supplement of 200 micrograms daily.  Most multivitamins are inadequate in this respect, Life Extensions 2-a-day multivitamin and the Life Extension mix are exceptions.  A separate supplement is just pennies a day.

Tomato Sauce - cooked tomatoes contain more bioavailable lycopene, another powerful antioxidant with apparent prostate cancer fighting properties.  Also found in red/pink grapefruit, and watermelon.

NATURAL SOLUTIONS

Whenever you see this picture, that page is focused on the natural food, supplements and lifestyle choices that promote general health, delay disease development and/or slow aging.  Some of these nutraceuticals (food extracts with medicinal effects) are used by practicing physicians as an adjunct to conventional medicine once disease is present.  The Natural Solutions pages are a companion to many Library topics, all gathered on this page for convenience.
